Bingo! You're right on both counts. Many of the more recent BD encodes (especially those from Warner) have had nearly indistinguishable picture quality to their HD-DVD counterparts, in part because Warner is freely using VC-1, but also because they're taking the time to make sure the master is done right. This is clearly not the case with other so-called "showcase" titles like Fifth Element, which has been razzed to the ends of the earth (and doesn't look much better than the standard DVD Superbit version). Poor master + crappy encode = thirty plus dollar coaster. On another interesting note, tomorrow is supposed to be the premiere of "Click" (starring Adam Sandler), the first BD-50 title. Although the movie has a short running time, all the extras are said to be in HD, and it'll be refreshing to a great number of the early adopters that BD-50 will be a reality. I didn't think BD-50 would hit the shelves this year, but they're doing it, and actually turning a promise into reality.
