You sure about that? I update my drivers regularly, and I've been having these problems as far back as Forceware 74.xx. BTW, you can always clear that up by

switching to the desktop and then switching back.
Yeah, that fixes that, but it doesn't stop all the 3D games from crashing all the time.
Personally I think it's your card. Either heat build-up or bad VRAM. Is it under warranty? Make sure that the case is well ventilated. I don't know what else to say, the only time I've seen that sort of behavior is when a card is failing, often due to overclocking or overheating. Hope I'm wrong.

Well, one thing I'm glad about: the weirdness depicted in the Master of
Orion screenshot *was* caused by the virus scanner, oddly enough - disabling
it allowed me a long game free of weird colours

Sadly, it's not under warranty, I've had this rig too long. But I'm going to
open it up and de-dust the case, see if that helps.

A shot in the dark here: have you upgraded your motherboard BIOS? I
had a similar problem that was fixed as soon as I flashed my BIOS.

I haven't, actually. I've always been a little nervous of doing so, just in
case I screw my machine up.

Plus the last time I read about doing so, it mentioned using a floppy, and
my PC doesn't have a floppy drive. LOL
