Aggressive Barbarians
Is it just my imagination, or have the barabrians become more numerous,
active and nasty in Warlords than in the vanilla version of Civ IV? Seems to
me they turn up much earlier and multiply like flies.

Definitely nastier. The AI was improved in Warlords, and the
barbarians were specifically made smarter. They are less likely to
wander aimlessly, not causing trouble or dying foolishly.
Game speed also affects barbarian intensity. Slower game speeds
breed more barbarians. Whether this is intended (a feature) or a bug,
it may be tweaked in a patch, but until then, epic/marathon games will
require more barbarian-blocking efforts than normal and quick speed
games.

Yes I think the barbarians are more aggressive overall.
Has anybody noticed that they vary with map type ? try playing the same
difficulty level with a fractal and a continents map.... when I have
done this it SEEMS they are tougher on the continents.

I must start up a fractal again to check; I haven't done that since the XP
came. On continents, at least, the barbarians have evolved from a nuisance
to a major problem. The Great Wall is extremely good to have, though if you
get it, the AI civs seem to start building towards it like blazes to benefit
from it too...

Yes, one thing I have noticed it that you can no longer fend them off by
placing axemen or archers outside your borders and let the barbarians attack
them - mostly in vain, which makes the border guards stronger all the time.
Once the AI has learned that there are tilled fields to pillage, workers to
kill and a city to capture further in, they generally ignore such sentinels.

Yes, they are less likely to know their place. But if you put together
a team of five state-of-the-art military units, and have them respond
to barbarian sightings, you can zap their efforts, and listen to the
lamentation of their women, instead of getting your cities trashed.

Get horses and build a few chariots.
They have a bonus against axemen and tear em up easily.
Archers even easier.
The 2 move points make it easier to get to the barbs too before they rape n'
pillage.

Hm. Time to radically move up Animal Husbandry on the priority list, it
seems. And hope that there are horses somewhere nearby. I play on large
maps, and the barbarians love large maps. So do I, unfortunately, because it
reduces the mad scramble for land that *still* is a factor in the game.
