Does anyone else have fond memories of this game? One thing I loved doing was planting thousands of trees in enemy territory, then setting fire to them! There wasn't much more effective than that when your manna supply was relatively modest.

For some reason I never played "Populous". Everything I 've heard of thegame indicates I would have enjoyed it a lot. I'll try to get hold of it.

Populous was always an interesting game. Real time strategy,
playing a god able to do some miracles but not -- like many RTS --
actually having direct control over every unit. You did things to
help your people -- primarily, clearing land to build settlements --
but could also affect your opponent. It also had a head to head
multiplayer (via serial port on Amiga, and I think on PC as well, not
a network game).
I think that the Amiga version of Populous -- the original -- was
the best as far as game play went. It was simple, and the single
player game was somewhat repetitive, but the actual play always felt
challenging. Populous II added different powers for your god, rather
than a single set for both players. Populous III is more like other
RTS, not entirely so but it doesn't give you the same feeling of being
a god, apart from the world but striving to control it.
