Default Patch out of control?

The EQPlayers site, http://eqplayers.station.sony.com/network_status.vm,
says:

All EverQuest English language servers will be coming down at 5:00 AM
PST on Thursday 10/05/2006 for a game update. Estimated downtime is 4 hours.

Its currently 3:34 EST, which is the equivalent, if I have this right,
of 12:34 PST. 5 PST plus 4 hours is 9 PST... so the patch is now 3 and
a half hours overdue from their estimate.

For once, the status page does show all servers as down, so I don't have
to wonder if its just login server congestion keeping me out, or whether
(as so frequently happens) they are listing the servers as up but in
fact they are not accessable because the login server isn't up; just a
few devs wandering around inside pretending to test the changes.

Can't find any text for the current patch (I miss the days when AGE
people seemed to compete to be the first to post the text, and then we'd
all pick it apart and try to figure out what was going on) either.
Guess I'll go read Order of the Stick or (shudder) try to get some
actual RL work done.

Well I went to the forums after I couldn't get in and it said that the
patch was to be extended another 3 hours and when that time was up I
went back to the forums and found that the patch should be over at
1PDT... wonder if they're going to extend the patch again, just what
could they have changed to make the patch 8 hours long?

At 3:52 EST the servers were listed as UP. However, I get exactly the
same message as before when trying to log in, saying that the login
servers are not allowing connections, likely due to a patch in progress.

Which, as you may know, irritates me no end; The server status page
should list whether you can log in or not, and when trying to log in, it
should be obvious whether you're just bouncing, or whether the server is
closed.

Routine maintenance, well I don't know that that consists of, of course,
but I really am mystified as to what could be both routine, and
potentially twice as time consuming as previously assumed.

If its just one server with a glitch, then sure, I can certainly see
that happening. But all servers, simultaneously? Sure sounds to me
like something was changed, and the change didn't go as expected.

They found a problem. From what I think I understand, a veterans aa
discipline that is supposed to double your xp earned for a period of time
was quadrupling it. Naturally anything that unduly helps players is given
highest priority for the kibosh stick.
