Default OT: Is my graphics card screwed?

Any software-mode game (ie, 2D graphics) that I play, goes like this every
few minutes:

http://www.evilbill.org.uk/craziness.jpg
http://www.evilbill.org.uk/wierd3.jpg

While every 3D game I play, *crashes* every few minutes.

These problems have been occurring for at least six months now, have
persisted between Windows reinstalls, and have not been affected by
consistently updating DirectX and grahics card drivers to the latest
versions.

The card's a 256MB AGP Geforce 6200 running alongside an AMD Sempron and a
gig of PC3200 DDR.

*Please* tell me it's not a hardware fault, I can't afford to replace the
card!

* I always hope for the best. Experience, unfortunately, has taught me to
expect the worst.

Have you tried checking the temp in there? Maybe just a fan went out or
something.
See if it works ok with the case off and maybe a desk fan blowing *gently*
at / into it?

Hi EB, this one here looks very similar to what happens on my backup
machine when playing D2. I actually traced it down to the antivirus program
that runs on that one. Minimizing the window and then reopening it resets
the picture for a while, and closing the AV stops it from happening at all.
I never figured out why exactly it happens. That machine doesn't have a
video card at all and runs windoze98.

My suggestion would be to pull the entire machine down and reassemble. One
dodgy connection or piece of dust in the wrong (right) place sure can screw
a complete system up. Grab a can of compressed air and give everything a
good blow down while it's apart. This is just thorough housekeeping. Zero
fill your drive (a mate of mine gave me a program called wipe to do this)
and that will ensure that no data is retained. Reinstall (oh joy). Hope this
helps, it's a PITA when boxes fail.

Oh, now *that* is interesting. Alt-Tabbing out and then back in does fix it,
but then it almost straight away happens again. I'll try it with my
antivirus turned off and see what happens.

Sadly, I can't wipe it, I don't have any spare drives I can back up all my
shit onto. LOL... at least, I don't right now. But I sure as hell will open
it up and clean it. I was forgetting how much these things are dust traps.
It might be overheating for precisely that reason, LOL

*nods* I wondered if that was it. I have checked the temperature before with
Sisoft Sandra but games tend to push the hardware more, so that might be it.
I don't have a desk fan, but I can certainly see how much dust has
accumulated inside my case LOL

As far as i know its to do with a process activating that changes to 32 bit
or 64 bit, (where 2d games run in 16bit or less). If you play Fullscreen D2,
try windowed and it'll never happen, its because something is launching
itself in your processes that changes the bits neccesary from your hardware.
No major malfunction i promise, mine ONLY does that in fullscreen mode.
