Doom 3 level architecture
Besides the atmosphere, the thing I loved most about Doom 1 & 2 was
the way each level was designed: the layout of the rooms and hallways
was really unique and memorable, resulting in great ambushes,
firefights, surprises...There was always a way to use the architecture
to your advantage.
I can't say that the Quake games were as well-designed that way. I
least they didn't impress me enough to remember them. But I still the
fondly remember the layout of many D1&2 levels.
So...What's the level design like in Doom 3?
Oh yeah, I get tired of crawling around in air ducts (Half Life, etc.
etc).

well it looks like half life but very very very darkj even at full
brightness. (kind of makes high graphics setting pointless) and like
halflife many crawling around air ducts and under stairs.
and like halflife it takes 15 minutes or more to get to the first
monster.
very slow game playing even with god mode on. basic recuiter esy
level is a bit too hard.
no coop mode. got to most likely wait until expansion comes out in a
few months for phobos.
finally verdict. very little replay value. people cant just go out
and make a level or mod for this game. unlike doom 1 and 2
oh im going to go see if give doom 95 optioin still works with the
release version.

Thanks. Sounds like I'm not going to bother with it. I wish they'd
just do an upgrade of Doom1 and 2 with improved graphics/sound for us
old-timers. Yeah, and I definitely miss the way you could create your
own levels for 1&2.

You must be joking. They were very well designed
In Quake 1, levels like
E2M4 (Ebon Fortress)
E2M5 (Wizard Manse)
E2M6 (Dismal Oubliette)
E3M5 (Wind Tunnels)
are very memorable. I was in awe of the Wind Tunnels, where you blown up
pipes and you dropped down into pools of water.
And Wizard Manse has got to be one of the blueest levels ever. Great
architectual 3D design with interlocking walkways.
And in Quake 2, remember the crates stacked in water, barracuda shark
swimming around and 2 crates bobbing in water? I swam underneath the bobbing
crates just to see the motion.
And the bridge over lava where you lower your enemies into it (heh heh).
Nope. The Quake's had very good level design. Very memorable.

Doom3 strikes me as too much of a role playing game. Not enough
action and gore. Those were the hallmarks of doom1 and doom2. Doom2
had a cheat to brighten the background for faster play. Does doom3
have a cheat to brighten the background? It is too dark.

Glad you enjoyed them, but they just didn't stick with me. I don't
like swimming or jumping on moving barrels and stuff like that. Too
much like Donkey Kong or something.
I also hated the way the shotgun sounds in Quake 1. Doesn't sound like
a shotgun at all. Right from the beginning, I thought, "Uh oh, this
isn't good."

You have got to be freakin' kidding me! Too much of a role playing game?!?
Ummm... there are no decisions to make. It is simply a Doom2 shooter on
steriods with a better back-story. RPG? You are a marine with weapons...
that's it. Perhaps the PDA e-mails and voice recordings have fooled you
into thinking you were doing something more than picking up keys. But
that's all they are -- glorified keys. It may look like Morrowind, but it
definately is not Morrowind.
I love Doom3 for what it is. Haven't you gotten that feeling while playing
that you were back in Doom2? I have, several times. If it doesn't have
enough gore for you then I worry about your mental stability. Where do you
work? A slaughter house?
My complaints about Doom3:
* no weapons with lights attached
* no Alt+Tab. COME ON, YOU PUT URLs IN THE GAME!
* "hidden closet" spawns
Other than that, it's all good.

findout why there is no duct tape in the 2145 time. seems back in the
year 2004 tape was used to bypass a digital protetion on a popular
game called doom3 expansion to phobos. because of a law called dmca
they had to ban duct tape for ever. also note for history readers it
was the same law that ban big tip markers being used on some compnay
called sonie music cds.
alt tab works.
