Default Flaky PS2

I have a flaky PS2. It will read some disks and not others. It will not read
any brand new disks; I get a read error.
It is a V4 system, just about 2 years old. Started acting up at about 1 year
of age.
I've cleaned the lens and it works for a while.
Do I need to replace the laser & pickup?
Do I need to replace just the lens?
Do I need to replace the whole drive assembly?
Any help would be great.
Thanks

return it to sony for the $100CDN flat rate, or buy a new one with proscan
and quiet fan for $200CDN.

If your's is like many others, your lens height needs re-adjusted. It's
very easy to do, click on this Techtv.com article for instructions:

You can contact Sony and they will fix it for free, I sent mine in a couple
of months ago, I just had to pay 10 dollars for shipping. I had it back in
about a week. Check the Sony website to get the 1-800 phone number.

Yep, call 'um up at the 1-800 number. They'll try to get you to re-set
the drivers first, that never works, then make sure you tell them that
you HAVEN'T dropped it or used a cheat device. They'll give you a
repair number and an address. It costs around $10 though I'd send it
with a tracking number or such from the USPS-cheaper!!! In 7 to 10
days they Fed-Ex it back to you with a new limited warrenty. Though,
I'd like to get the newer PS2 version myself. . .you could buy a new
one and use the older one as a door stop!!!
