Default More civ4 tech, (sorry)

This being a civ3 newsgroup, I hope you'll excuse me.

I just got civ4, and I'm pretty exited go get going, but can't get it to
work properly.
I suspect my graphics card to be the issue, but I'd like to be somewhat
sure, before I go spending my money.
My current card is a NVIDIA GeForce FX 5500 256 MB.

When I start civ4, I first get a nice deep blue screen and some music.
When I click, I get the civ4 logo and clouds passing over part of the globe,
plus more music, although the music isn't playing too smooth (it's flawed).
I don't get any text (buttons) allowing me to select 'single player game'
ect.

Now, some of you seem rather experienced with hardware issues. Would you say
it was likely to be due to my graphics card? And if you do, what specifics
should I look for in a new card.

I have a 2004 HP pavilion t640, and though it's not really a core gaming PC,
I've run a lot of 'non-graphic-heavy' games like civ3 and icewind dale.

Try some different driver releases. From what i have read, that can make a
big difference.

My same thoughts. Go to the NVidia page and download the latest
drivers. After downloading, uninstall your old drivers, restart,
install your new drivers.
Also, you didn't mention how much memory you had in the PC. I would
recommend 1GB.

Incorrect.

Just because the drivers don't work for you, doesn't mean they don't work
for everyone. I run 81.85 and I have no problems at all. If you're not
aware of this by now, all computers, with their complex and different
configurations, are not the same. Certainly, if someone is having problems
that appear to be related to video, changing drivers might be a first step
in trying to fix the problem. But there might be more to do. The first
thing I would do is disable all virus programs and any other truly
unnecessary stuff that is loaded onto a computer. (And yes, from my
experience, virus programs do more harm than good, loading an enormous
amount of junk on a computer that is completely unnecessary. A virus
program is the most intrusive thing one could have on a computer.)

It is amazing how much junk can accumulate on a computer, if you're not
careful and don't clean things regularly.

Trial and error helps when troubleshooting. But because one person has a
problem does not mean that everyone must have the same problem.

thats quite rich, considering in this newsgroup everyone is blaming the game
and not thinking its maybe there drivers. Your one of the first to be on "my
wave length" by thinking it MIGHT be the fact that every pc is different and
maybe its the PC thats broken/buggy and not the game....

I personaly havent tried 81.85 with Civ4, but they broke everything else so
im not going to bother reinstalling them!!

If these people have problems and they are using 81.85 the first thing im
doing is recommending them trying a lower driver! One reason Civ3 didnt have
these issues was it was 2d... Now its 3d, Civ4 will be prone to more graphic
card problems....

FYI:
The 78.05 worked, though it flickered quite a bit. But the 81.85 runs
nicely.
The cursor is still a bit uneasy, but I might add some more RAM. (Currently
512MB).

Thank you very much for your time, all of you!
(and now I shall get back to the game)
